Apply for the "Blue Angel" eco-label

Products and services that have been awarded the Blue Angel label are more environmentally friendly than comparable, conventional products and services.

Every time you buy a product or service, you are directly or indirectly influencing the impact on water, soil, air or your own health.

To help you base your purchasing decisions on environmental considerations, you need reliable and trustworthy information about a product’s environmental and health impacts. This is exactly where the Blue Angel comes in.

You must apply to have your products or services labelled with the ‘Blue Angel’. The duration of the licence to use the ‘Blue Angel’ is linked to the validity period of the relevant award criteria.

Responsible department

  • for a new proposal or an ongoing assessment application: the Federal Environment Agency, Office of the Eco-Label Jury, in Dessau
  • for proposals for which award criteria already exist: the German Institute for Quality Assurance and Labelling (RAL)

Procedure

First, check whether there are already Blue Angel tender specifications for your product or service. You have the following options:

  • If procurement guidelines are already in place: You can apply to use the Blue Angel logo through the German Institute for Quality Assurance and Labelling (RAL). Since 1 July 2020, new applications and amendments can only be submitted online via the WEB-PORTAL.
  • If there are no existing award criteria yet, but your product or service is already included in the list of pending assessment applications: You can apply in writing to the Federal Environment Agency, Office of the Eco-Label Jury in Dessau, to use the Blue Angel.
  • For a new proposal: You can apply in writing to the Federal Environment Agency, Office of the Eco-Label Jury, in Dessau, to use the Blue Angel.

If the requirements for using the “Blue Angel” are met, the relevant authorities will conclude a fixed-term licence agreement with you.
You may advertise your product or service using the “Blue Angel”.

  • An informal, product-specific application on the applicant’s company letterhead, stating the federal state in which
    • the production facility for the products to be labelled is situated, or
    • the registered office is situated.
  • Test report:
    The test report is drawn up by an independent testing body and confirms that the award criteria for the ‘Blue Angel’ have been met.
  • Consumer information
  • Expected turnover for the products or services bearing the eco-label in the year of application (if no licence agreement has yet been concluded)
  • The required documents can also be viewed under the ‘Application Documents’ section of the award criteria

Costs

The costs are based on the turnover generated by the product or service. You can view the costs relevant to you here

Processing time

depending on whether

  • you are submitting the request for a product included in the list of current test orders, or
  • it is a new proposal
