Register of dentists - apply for registration

You must first be entered in the register of dentists if you

  • wish to apply for a licence, or
  • seek employment with a registered dentist.

The Kassenzahnärztliche Vereinigungen (KZV) keep a dentist register for each registration district, in which they register dentists. It contains information on the person and professional activity of the dentists that is relevant for admission.

Note: If you reside outside Germany, you are free to choose the dentist register.

Prerequisite

You

  • have been licensed as a dentist and
  • have completed a preparatory period of at least two years.

Note: The two-year preparatory period may be waived in some cases. In order to do so, you must have obtained a diploma recognised under Community law in other Member States of the European Community and be entitled to practise the profession.

You must have assisted or represented one or more contracted dentists for at least six months of the preparatory period. You can replace up to three months of this time with work of the same duration in a university dental clinic.

Please note: Substitution periods are only recognised if you were employed for at least one year beforehand:

  • As an assistant with a contract dentist,
  • in university dental clinics,
  • in dental wards of a hospital,
  • in the public health service,
  • in the armed forces or
  • in dental clinics.

You can also complete the rest of the preparatory period as an employed dentist in one of the above-mentioned institutions. Activities can only be credited from a length of three weeks.

Procedure

You must submit a written application for entry in the register of dentists to the competent office. You will receive written confirmation of your registration.

Note: In the case of two partial admissions in different admission districts, two entries are made in the dentist registers of the respective districts.

Note: If you are unable to present the required documents, you must demonstrate in another way that you meet the requirements. Ask the competent office directly how you can provide the evidence.
