Registration in the list of architects
To erect buildings which require a building permit or a notification procedure, an engineer in the field of structural engineering or civil engineering may only be appointed as an architect for the required building documentation, if s/he is registered in the list of architects kept at the Chamber of Engineers (Ingenieurkammer) in Baden-Württemberg.
You have to apply to be registered in the list of architects. If you are already registered in such a list in another German Federal State, this registration also applies in Baden-Württemberg.
Established persons from other EU states authorised to present building documents
If you have set up business as a person authorised to present building documents in another member state of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA), you are authorised to present building documents without being registered in the list of architects if you
- have a comparable authorisation and
- you had to meet requirements for this which are comparable to those for registration in the list of architects.
The first time you carry out this work as a person authorised to present building documents, you have to notify the Chamber of Engineers in Baden-Württemberg before starting to work. Upon request, the Chamber of Engineers will confirm that the notification has been made.
If no comparable requirements are placed in the country of origin, you will have to apply to the Chamber of Engineers for a confirmation that you meet the requirements necessary for registration in the list of architects. Persons, who are issued this confirmation, are registered in a separate directory.
Note: If you have already notified your activity in another German Federal State or you were issued such a confirmation there, it is not necessary to notify or have the confirmation issued in Baden-Württemberg.

Prerequisite
To be registered in the list of architects, you have to
- provide evidence of a vocational degree in the field of structural engineering or civil engineering and
- have worked practically for at least two years after your final degree in the design engineering of buildings.
Procedure
Registration in the list of architects
You have to apply for registration in the list of architects. The required application form is available as a download.
You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt from the responsible authority.
The Chamber of Engineers will check that the form of the application is correct and complete, and will pass it on to the "Registration Committee for the List of Architects" for assessment. The board of the chamber will then decide on the registration.
If you are included in the list of architects, you will be issued a certificate.
Notification of the activity if you have set up business in another EU/EEA state
You can notify your activity informally at the Chamber of Engineers in Baden-Württemberg. You will receive a confirmation.
Application for a confirmation in acc. with § 43 Para. 8 of the German state building regulations (Landesbauordnung – LBO) on meeting the requirements for registration
Upon request, you will receive a confirmation that you meet the requirements for registration in the List of Architects, if the requirements of your country are not comparable. After the confirmation has been issued, you will be registered in a directory.

Notification procedure and registration in the directory
- confirmation that you have set up a legal business in your country of origin as a person authorised to present building documents and that you have not been prohibited even temporarily from carrying out this work at the time you present this confirmation
- proof that for the work at least the requirements needed for registration in the list of architects have to be met.
Certification procedure and registration entry
- proof of a vocational degree in the field of structural engineering or civil engineering
- proof of at least two years of practical work in the field of design engineering (e.g. confirmation from previous employers that you have carried out the corresponding activity)
Costs
The fees for the registration are 300 euros.
Persons who are not members of the chamber also have to pay an annual fee of 150 euros to be kept in the list in addition to the registration fee.
