Apply for an electronic residence permit (eAT)

You will receive your residence permit in the form of a card with additional electronic functions. Infants and children will also receive their own card. Inside the card, the eAT contains a contactless chip. It stores

  • biometric data (photograph, fingerprints from the age of six),
  • additional provisions relating to the residence permit (for example, conditions and requirements) as well as
  • personal data.

The eAT has an online identification function that enables you to use public services and commercial online services provided via the internet. Use of the online identification function is voluntary.

The eAT covers the following residence permits:

  • Residence permit
  • EU Blue Card
  • Settlement permit
  • EU long-term residence permit
  • Residence card for third-country nationals who are family members of nationals of an EU or EEA country
  • Long-term residence card for third-country nationals who are family members of nationals of an EU or EEA country
  • Residence permit for Swiss nationals and their family members from third countries, if they opt for an eAT
  • ICT card
  • Mobile ICT card

Prerequisite

Please note: A residence permit in the form of a sticker in your passport or passport substitute documents, which was already in force before 31 August 2011, must now be issued as an eAT. Stickers may still be used in exceptional cases and only for temporary use.

Procedure

You must apply for the electronic residence permit in person at the relevant office. They will take your fingerprints there. Children aged six and over must also provide their fingerprints.

Deadlines

Apply for the electronic residence permit in credit card format in good time before your current residence permit or travel document expires.
